Leadership Lessons #1

Leadership Lessons #1

Beyond School is growing and FAST! We have exciting news to share as well as our ‘lessons learned’ from leading this school of the future into whatever it will become…

We are learning so much and so intensely and we want to bring you with us on the journey WE are on because, as you will know, OPENNESS is one of our core valuesWe are committed to openness and transparency in how we run our company, with our team and our students and their families.

Since Lucy joined our leadership team, and we became a trinity, we have begun the work of bringing ADULT learning and personal growth into our suite of offerings as well as our work with children and their families.

We’ve improved Boost, our online learning lab, adding six clearly defined and yet interrelated learning tracks to what we offer inside there:

  1. Money and finance
  2. Business and career
  3. Parenting
  4. Education
  5. Self growth and development
  6. Health and wellness

We’ve been building our social media presence (and we appreciate your support in this!) and getting our brand identity out there.

We are, as ever, committed to always and forever elevating the quality of what we put out to our world, always to building our table ever bigger and creating abundance (in all the ways) for us all.

So, in line with this, we are committed to sharing our learnings with you. Here they are along with the all-important ’so what’s?

Leadership is not about simply getting your piece of the pie…

It’s about making more pie for everyone. This is what Beyond School’s model is all about. It’s not a zero sum game where we’re in it for ourselves, we’re in it for everyone.

Listen, then build what you hear them ask for…

We each have our own ideas about what people need and what we want to provide; that isn’t always what people actually want and need and, most importantly, will buy.

Focus On world class…

When building a team, we have a clear intrinsic idea of what makes someone a “BeyondSchooler”. These are people with vision who understand our vision and who will run hard, step into the space we’ve created (for everyone) and only need to be invited once to do so.

Lead by example. Show don’t tell…

The two or our leadership team members who aren’t running the Anti-racism bootcamp have booked and paid to take the Anti-racism bootcamp because we recognise we have work to do, we are working on ourselves and ever learning along with our students AND we (Jenn and Lucy) trust Lea and Sharon to offer us a world class learning experience, have YOU booked your place yet?

(The right) Partnerships are vital. Choose wisely…

In romance. Friendship. Business. We are proud and excited to be building a team of world class teachers, experts, innovators and mavericks with shared values. Who we spend our lives with, day in and day out, makes ALL the difference to the lives we’re creating and living. Choose wisely.

Not everyone gets it…

Some people just won’t ‘get’ our vision, approach, values and goals for Beyond School. We are committed to focusing on those who do and to not spending precious time and energy converting those who don’t. Our energy stays with excellence, with the people aligned with where we are and where we are heading and isn’t diversified or distracted.

Processes Reduce Friction…

We are glad to have learned early about the absolute importance of robust processes which are designed and implemented AHEAD of incidents and events that occur. Proactive vs reactive management and leadership is important to us AND we know we can not anticipate EVERYTHING that may come our way. *However, we work FAST together as a team and so our reactive may actually appear proactive to the usual human eye ;). As a leadership team, we are working around all the clocks to build systems and processes which are anticipatory, scalable and will hold us well as we grow.

Three Is Better Than Two…

This month, two became three as we welcomed Lucy to our leadership team. We have an expert in adult learning, personal growth and development and we are enjoying being a thrupple, having more brains to bounce our ideas and dreams around in and more hands to do our work as we expand our offer and build our school with passion and ambition.

Our Commitment to Anti-Racism Doesn’t Stop..

Our anti-racism learnings as a leadership team will never end; we are alert to our unconscious biases and internal processes as we navigate our OWN racism and manage together as we perceive racism in others. Anti-racism is a journey we take seriously as a leadership team, we want awareness, knowledge and alertness to our own unconscious processes baked into us each personally, to our interpersonal process as a team and to our school. We are each deeply committed to our ongoing journeys and we want to take you with us.

The Juggling Never Ends…

We have families, we have commitments outside of Beyond School and we are each a work in progress. We know that the best, most effective way of managing the juggle of all the things we carry is to integrate, to connect, harmonise and flow. Knowing this, showing this and living this – walking our talk while picking up dog poo, taking calls from our kids mid focus on something else and managing the complexities of parenting, step parenting and long distance lockdown parenting while also building the school of the future – is actually inviting and allowing us to model important conscious and integrated leadership practices to and for everyone.

Time is a construct we can use to our advantage…

We always knew we would be leading and building Beyond School asynchronously. This month, daylight saving and travel have led us across the space time continuum in ways that have made our leadership team communication interesting. We haven’t been certain what time it is across our leadership team in all the locations we span despite our experience in being location independent. Someone is usually awake, so…

Choose The Right Tech Stack…

And ever back to the tech, we’ve started using Basecamp as a way to keep close with our team and we are loving the ease of it for communicating, keeping up with each other’s projects and processes and as a way to build collaboration. Back to our wanting and owning our need to build a scalable business (an ever growing table!), Basecamp gives us that capability.

That’s it for this month…a treasure trove of learnings that we’ll keep coming back to and keep learning forwards.
