Meet Your Teacher

James is a professional coach and educator who has the opportunity to work with children, young adults, university athletes, Olympians and professional athletes. Despite the range of age and level his goal remains the same – to help individuals improve mentally, physically and emotionally every single day.

James’s love of physical activity and sport began as a young child as he was part of a military family that frequency moved. Athletics gave him the opportunity to relate to peers wherever he went and provided opportunities to develop self-confidence, “GRIT” and a growth-mindset.

James is a teacher at heart who has always focused on challenging himself and supporting others to improve every single day. He received an undergraduate degree in History and English from Queen’s University in Kingston ON where he also played basketball for the Golden Gaels.  James later received his Master’s in Elementary Education – with a focus in educational policy.

During this time his passion for sport evolved into coaching as James began coaching at elite high school basketball camps around the North Eastern United States as well as Canada.

After completing his Master’s James and his wife Katherine moved to the United Kingdom where James pursued his coaching career at Leeds Metropolitan University Basketball as Head Coach of both the club and university Women’s basketball programs. He also became a national team coach for both England Basketball and the British University Games teams.

For 4 years he coached professional basketball while also having the opportunity to work with and mentor youth and elite youth athletes.

Since 2011 James has been working in Canada as a full time Women’s Basketball coach at the Royal Military College of Canada followed by 8 years at his Alma Mater Queen’s University.

James routinely speaks as a guest lecturer around Ontario and is a coaching clinician for coaching development in his local area.  His greatest personal coaching achievement is being a father of 2 young children.

His teaching focus is clear, as Ralph Waldo Emerson says, “Nothing great has ever been achieved without enthusiasm”. James has always encouraged people of all ages to understand the pure enjoyment of physical activity, challenging oneself and of course the importance of being in the moment.

He wants everyone to E.A.T (Enthusiastically Attack Today), while also “Doing your best to be your best”. His goal is for students and parents who participate to enjoy the activities, learn something new and come away with a sense of the great accomplishment of attempting to do your best.

  • Mentally = Understand something better
  • Physically = Do something better
  • Emotionally = Choose to feel better

He will be providing both live and pre-recorded classes that can be accessed and completed at any time.
